Coutts Information Services, a division of Ingram Library Services, is a full-service supplier of books and electronic content, primarily focused on academic libraries. We partner with publishers, small presses, institutions, and associations to find everything you need. OASIS™ (Online Acquisition and Selection Information Services) is the user interface to Coutts' bibliographic database of five million records and the gateway to our suite of services for librarians, including customized approval orders, new title notification plans, and sourcing out-of-print books.
Coutts is seeking a team oriented, flexible, and service-oriented individual for the position of Cataloger within our Niagara Falls, New York location. The successful candidate will be a self starter with the ability to work in an open team environment. Applicants should be detail oriented while possessing strong oral, written and interpersonal skills.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Supervisor of Core and Approval Cataloging, the Cataloger is responsible for cataloging and classification of new books according to both Coutts approval cataloging rules and national cataloging standards. Cataloging records are produced in this department for use by the customer catalogers as well as the approvals selection team. The Cataloguer is expected to perform his/her duties in compliance with the Technical Services department’s established workflow management procedures, as well as the company policies and procedures.
Essential Duties
- Engages in both copy and original cataloging in MARC21 format and uses authorities accordingly
- Edits MARC records according to national cataloging standards for use by customer catalogers.
- Records daily statistics in individual and departmental spreadsheets.
- Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of cataloging.
- Works closely with the Supervisor of Core and Approval Cataloging, Selectors and Customer Catalogers to provide the best possible Cataloging services to customers.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience in MARC21 format; AACR2, LCSH, LC and Dewey Classification
- Experience with LC, NLC, Dewey, NLM, and Moys classification schemes and LC, CSH, MESH, and Sears subject analysis formats.
- Current awareness and experience with bibliographic utilities and CD-ROM technologies
- Detail oriented and able to work in an open team environment.
- Strong oral, written, organizational and interpersonal skills.
- NLM Classification and MeSH experience an asset
- French verbal and written skills; other language experience an asset.
Education and Experience
- ALA Accredited Master of Library Science Degree or equivalent
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in Cataloging.
