The Charleston Conference

The Charleston Conference, just completed, proved to be an exciting venue for Coutts Library Services. From the beginning, Coutts' attendees were inundated by librarians wanting to be updated about Company news and events.

The conference opened with the heavily attended Vendor Showcase. Coutts Vice-President of Sales, Andy Alferovs, and US Sales Director, Frank Semancik, met with numerous librarians to discuss the entire range of Coutts services. Of particular interest to many attendees was the arrival of Bob Schatz as Coutts' Director of New Business Development for the US, his first such appearance following the closing of Franklin Book Company. With Coutts providing continuing service to former Franklin Book customers, Bob's arrival was even more noteworthy.

Both Andy Alferovs and Bob Schatz made presentations during the Charleston Conference. Andy, along with Anne Deacon, Head of Acquisitions at the University of Western Ontario, presented a detailed examination of Coutts' system-to-system interface with the UWO Library. The session, presented to well over one hundred librarians (and a few other vendors) discussed the process whereby Western Ontario uses the Coutts' online database to generate order records with a seamless interface with their Innovative ILS. Bob was an organizer and participant in a panel discussion of the library bookselling market and the future of vendors within that market.

Coutts Intuitive Technology makes an impact on University of Western

Coutts Library Services successfully partnered with the University of Western Ontario in developing a seamless download of full level MARC records using iApprove, Coutts' selection support system. Amongst other systems, iApprove is compatible with the market-leading library management system, Millennium, from Innovative Interfaces, Inc.

Anne Deacon, Head of Acquisitions at Western Libraries comments on the benefits of a successful partnership: “Western Libraries' desire to become leaders in Library acquisition and processing field led to discussions with key partners in mid 2004 to consider how we could work collaboratively and cooperatively to draw on the strengths of each organization. With Coutts' one click download and Innovative's powerful ability to automatically merge bibliographic records with the order and item records, Western Libraries capitalized on the strengths of both systems. This new workflow expedited our ordering process, substantially freeing our staff from repetitive routine tasks.”
